Shadow & Flame is the second book in the Rime series.
The main story is told from dual points of view. Both sides giving strength to the story and showing how each character grows from the last book, and how they discover more about themselves.
The story starts with quite the prologue with Kate and Corwin and a ban of warriors and wilders (those able to wield magic) entering a pit filled with fellow wilders that are being held captive, but due to an unknown force the wilders don’t want to leave. Due to this the rescue mission fails and Kate loses some of those that she loves.
The main story picks up shortly after the end of Onyx & Ivy with Kate the leader of the Rising movement to keep her fellow wilders safe from High King Edwin, who has declared himself the King despite the Uror never being concluded.
Kate has now earned the title of Wilder Queen after war against the Rimish Empire, she doesn’t care much for the title since it’s just one more reminder of those that were lost in the war. Kate is determined to keep those that she care about alive no matter the costs, even if it means using her sway magic on them. Kate is having a hard time dealing with the loss of those that helped her in the rescue mission and keeps them close to her heart.
Meanwhile over in Seva the king is amassing an army to take over Rime. Possibly with the help of a slave name Clash, who may or may not help end the conflict.
I found the story to be very action packed from start to finish, all the characters had an important role to play and I felt that none of them really stood in the background. Each one had their own personal trials to go through which in the end made them stronger.
Mindee was able to keep me glued to the pages along with keeping the pace going with this book, just like the first one.
